Otter and Descript alternatives, if all you need is the transcript
Limits below were checked on both official pricing pages on 2026-08-30. If they've changed since, trust their pages, not ours.
| Tool | Transcription limits | The catch for podcasters |
|---|---|---|
| Otter.ai Free | 300 min/mo · 30 min per recording | File imports: 3 lifetime — uploading episodes is effectively a paid feature |
| Otter.ai Pro | $16.99/mo · 1,200 min/mo · 90 min per recording | 10 file imports per month |
| Descript Free | 60 min/mo | Less than one typical episode; 720p watermark-free video export |
| Descript Hobbyist | $24/mo ($16/mo annual) · 10 hrs/mo | The real floor if you publish weekly |
| PodcastCleanup | Free · no minutes cap | Transcription runs on your own device, so there is nothing to meter |
Why podcasters bounce off Otter
Otter is built for live meetings: it shines when it sits in a call and takes notes. Podcasting is the opposite workflow — you already have a recorded file. That's exactly where Otter's free plan is tightest: 3 file imports, lifetime, and a 30-minute cap per recording. An Otter.ai alternative for podcasters isn't a better meeting bot — it's anything that treats uploaded (or better, never-uploaded) audio files as the main course.
Why podcasters bounce off Descript's free plan
Descript's 60 free minutes per month is less than most single episodes — details in our Descript pricing breakdown. To be clear about what a “Descript alternative” can honestly mean: nothing free replicates Descript's actual product, which is editing audio and video by editing text. If that's what you need, pay for Descript — it's good at it.
The honest decision table
- You edit audio/video by editing text → Descript (paid). No free tool does this well.
- You want live meeting notes → Otter. That's its home turf.
- You want transcript → cleanup → captions → show notes from a recorded episode → that's us, free, below.
- You're technical and want full control → run open-source Whisper locally. Same models we use, minus the browser convenience.
What PodcastCleanup does — and deliberately doesn't
Our tool transcribes with Whisper in your browser(audio never uploaded, so there's no minutes cap to sell you), removes filler words with every deletion highlighted, and generates chapters, clip suggestions, and show notes. It does notedit your audio, clone voices, or label speakers — if you need those, the paid tools above earn their money. We'd rather be a complete answer to the transcript problem than a partial answer to every problem.
Not affiliated with Otter or Descript. This page exists because “alternative to X” searches usually land on listicles ranking ten tools by screenshot — we'd rather tell you which tool fits which job, including when the answer isn't us.
