The number that actually decides it: 60 minutes
The free plan's 60 transcription minutes per month is less than most single podcast episodes. That's the real paywall: if you publish weekly, free Descript runs out on episode one, and the jump is $16-24/month billed annually. The watermark only matters if you export video; audio-first podcasters mostly hit the minutes cap first.
When paying for Descript is the right call
- You edit audio/video by editing text — that's Descript's actual product and nothing free replicates it well.
- You use overdub/voice clones, filler-word audio removal, or multitrack.
- Your team collaborates in one project — Business exists for this.
When you don't need to pay at all
If what you actually need is transcription → clean transcript → captions → show notes, that whole loop runs free in your browser with our cleanup tool— no minutes cap, because your audio is transcribed on your own device and never uploaded. No watermark either, because there's no video render. Use the savings on your hosting bill.
